yogaQUEST is a yoga studio for the everyday Tulsan.
Experiencing yoga is personal…it is your journey and there is so much more to yoga than asana (postures). We are here to support and guide, remember, life is a quest.
‘Yoga cannot be explained, it has to be experienced.’ —B.K.S. Iyengar
Movement has always been a key component to my identity; starting at the young age of 4 with ballet. Even when I was diagnosed with Scoliosis at the age of 8, I needed to move – ultimately adding gymnastics.
When we are children, we believe we are invincible.
Fast forward to the age of 32. The pressure from scoliosis led to the diagnosis of Crohn’s disease; a result of the compression of nerves around my lower spine negatively impacting my gut.
The brakes were abruptly applied to my love of movement.
While I was recovering from two surgeries for the Crohn’s disease and knowing that I had to purposefully reintroduce movement back into my life, that I stepped back into the gym and into aerobics. As luck would have it, there were concurrent yoga classes happening which peaked my interest, shortly thereafter I was hooked.
In 1999, I took my first yoga class from the founder of yogaQUEST, Greg McCann. My goal was to rebuild my muscle strength, tone and density. I stayed with the authentic hot yoga practice called Bikram (what we teach as the Hot 90) through 2005 when I made the decision to go to a nine-week intensive teacher training in LA.
I was drawn to the Bikram practice because of the mental focus and body awareness aspect that was required just like studying ballet for many years.
The authentic Hot Yoga practice helped my body heal and realign itself. My love for yoga and the yQ community lead me to purchase the studio in 2012.
Over the years I learned how extremely important a healthy, open, straight spine is to our mental and physical health. Through a consistent yoga practice, I was able to increase my strength and energy, as well as learn how to better cope with stress. Practicing the spine and core-based postures and breathing techniques in a quiet, heated room with the sound of a certified Hot 90 instructor leading the way has given me a vibrant, healthy life!
I am convinced that this practice has kept me off medication and improved my overall health. When I saw my gastroenterologist last, he couldn't believe how well I was doing.
We see so many people come to the studio and find benefit from the variety of yoga classes that focus on overall healing and preventing injury. As legacy yoga instructor, B.K.S. Iyengar, once said, ‘Yoga cannot be explained, it has to be experienced.’
I look forward to meeting you and mutually sharing these amazing benefits.
